The Foreign Pharmacy Graduate Equivalency Examination (FPGE) is a pharmacy exam sat by Foreign Graduate Pharmacists who wish to become licensed to practice in the United States. The certification is accepted by 50 state boards of pharmacy as a means of documenting the educational equivalency of a candidate's foreign pharmacy education and licensure. The FPGEE is administered once a year at Pearson VUE test sites throughout the continental United States.

Prior to sitting for the FPGE, there are a number of requirements that each candidate needs to meet. Primarily, the TOEFL iBT exam, which is an English exam to ascertain fluency levels for foreign pharmacists. Every candidate must pass the TOEFL iBT exam before they are accepted into sitting for the FPGE.

 

Candidates are required to pass the FPGEE as part of the FPGEC Certification process. The FPGEE is based on a nationally uniform content blueprint and is developed, administered, and scored under policies and procedures developed by the NABP Advisory Committee on Examinations and approved by the NABP Executive Committee. The examination is a comprehensive measure of pharmacy knowledge in four major content areas: 

  • 10% - Basic Biomedical Sciences 
  • 33% - Pharmaceutical Sciences 
  • 22% - Social/Behavioral/Administrative Pharmacy Sciences 
  • 35% - Clinical Sciences 

For a more in-depth syllabus please click here. You must take the examination at one of two consecutive opportunities upon being accepted to take the FPGEE. Additional opportunities to take the FPGEE will only be allowed if The National Association of Boards of Pharmacy (NABP) receives an official denial of your visa or you have a health or work-related problem. This will need to be substantiated on official stationery from your health provider or place of employment stating that you cannot attend your second or subsequent opportunity.
